Creating a level.
Hey everyone,
I'm Shree Charan Bharadwaj. I work on graphics and everything artistic in our upcoming game Rebirth and Kartik works on programming for the game. This week I'll be sharing a few things and the coming weekend kartik will have a few things to share. As we are the only two people working on the game we have decided post weekly post and alternate the focus on art and programming. This is the first time I'm writnig an article so I hope it is somewhat good.
As you know our game is first person horror. Last week we shared a few screenshots of the environment. We want to produce an ambient game with creepy and clastrophobic environment. Creating an ambient environment is very challenging and I am way too far from creating a good ambient level. I'll tell you in this article how we create a basic level in our game.
We create a basic layout of our level from one point in game to other may it be from one sequence to other or a beigining of a chapter and sketch it down in a book. Then I recreate the layout in UE4 using BSP (Binary Space Partitioning) brushes making changes where we think is needed. Then I place some lights to rough out the feeling of the lighting. At this stage we play through the created level and get a feel for it and check how far it is from what we initially imagined. Then I create and add or use an existing material to the walls and floors in key locations and see how it feels. If we think it works then we go forward otherwise back to changing materials and iterate.
Then I export the BSP into static mesh and recreate it in blender. I have to recreate it because the static mesh straight from BSP has way too many problems to fix. Then I decide how many separations should be made to the created static mesh considering the performance hit and lightmap resolutions. Then I import it into UE4 and replace the BSP mesh with it. Then I texture the mesh again. There finishes the basics of the level. There is a lot more to be done after this. I'll share it in the next art focused article two weeks from now.
We need your support. You can give us your thoughts on comments or by sending us an email. Feel free to get in touch with us.
Thank you for reading the article. We'll see you next week. Have a great weekend.
